Dry Mouth 101

Occasionally, every person may experience dry mouth. This usually happens when a person is nervous, tense or under stress. But drying mouth could be pretty problematic if you're experiencing it for longer durations or more often than usual.

Sticky, dry feeling of the mouth, frequent thirst, sores in the mouth or in the split skin at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, dry and red tongue, difficulty in tasting, chewing and swallowing, hoarseness, dry nasal passages, sore throat and bad breath are some of the hints of dry mouth.

Saliva keeps the mouth wet. It helps digest food, protect teeth from decay, prevent infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth, and makes it possible for us to chew and swallow. Not having enough saliva can increase the risk of tooth decay and other infections in the mouth. Difficulty in chewing and swallowing may hinder the body from getting as much nourishment as it needs.

Some people think it is a normal part of aging. But it is not! Other people however may feel the symptoms of mouth that is dry even if their salivary glands are working properly. People with certain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or those who have suffered a stroke may not feel the wetness in their mouths and think it is dry even though it's not.

What to do if you think you are experiencing dry mouth? Sip water more often. Avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea and soda). Caffeine dries the mouth. Sip water during meals. This will help make chewing and swallowing easier. You may chew sugarless gum or suck sugarless candy to stimulate saliva flow. Citrus, cinnamon or mint-flavored candies can do the trick! Don't smoke tobacco or drink alcohol. They increase the risk to dry mouth. Be aware of spicy and salty foods that may cause pain when you have dry mouth and AVOID them.

When a woman gets pregnant her body goes through many different kinds of changes. Hormone levels will be on the rise as the body prepares to sustain life for both the mother and the fetus.

Mood Swings

Jim is a successful software engineer and a happily married man with a loving wife and two lovely children. These days, he goes through a range of emotions in the matter of hours and there seems to be just one term to describe it - a roller coaster ride. When he wakes up in the morning, he feels great and looks forward to the day. Breakfast time with his family is a fun-filled time and Jim feels his normal self, joking and asking his kids about their school and friends. By lunch, his mood has darkened and he is tense and nervous. This at times results in his feeling aggressive towards his co-workers and subordinates. By end of the day, he is extremely restless and can barely wait to finish his work and head home. Back home, his mood stays unchanged. He does not want to speak to anyone or go out and do something. By late evening, Jim is feeling fine again. He is watching some old movies with his family and fondly reminiscing about the past. But as the night approaches, Jim's spirits start to sink again till he is in utter despair by midnight. Day in and day out, Jim goes through these extreme mood shifts and he is afraid that he has completely lost control of his emotions.

Jim is going through what are called Mood Swings. The most common way of defining mood swings is that they are rapidly changing moods. Capable of causing extreme emotional distress, mood swings can make you feel very lost and lonely. In fact, your reactions in certain situations may be absolutely extreme without your even realizing it. Though a very common occurrence, not many realize that they are going through mood swings, resulting in a very frustrating time for both themselves and even more so for their family members, till they seek help. Everyone goes through stress and anxiety at different stages and at different levels in their lifetime and these can cause mood swings from time to time. However, if the mood swings are frequent and are severe enough to be disrupting your life, you should seek help.

If undiagnosed and untreated, causes for the mood changes are not understood leading to a very frustrating time for you and a very painful time for your family. Not knowing what is triggering your mood changes, how to cope with them and how to help you when you are in these extreme moods, can be unnerving. In fact, you may feel so out of control that you may slowly stop doing all those activities that you once enjoyed for sheer fear of people seeing you when you are experiencing one of your mood swings.

Mood Swings are often confused with Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression. However, it is important to note that mood swings are not as severe and do not last as long as the more advanced form of Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression. In Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression Disorder, extreme moods of depression or mania persist for many days, at times for weeks and months.

What should however be heartening to hear is that mood swings are very common and there are a variety of treatment options, from which one can choose the particular treatment option that suits them best. Further, treatment methods for mood swings have excellent success rates with almost 80-90% of all those who seek help experience great relief. Unfortunately, only about one third of those who suffer from chronic mood disorders seek help, with the rest suffering in silence. The History Of Bubble Gum

The Bubble Gum has gone through a lot over its long history. In the early 1900s, a man named Frank Fleer tried to come up with the perfect bubble gum recipe for his candy company. He experimented with a lot of gum recipes to find it. His first bubble gum however turned out to be too sticky and his recipes were never sold.

In 1928, Walter Diemer was able to discover the bubble gum recipe by accident. He was experimenting with different gum recipes when he stumbled upon a mixture that started to form bubbles. He took this discovery and brought it to a grocery store to test it. All the gum was sold in a single day.

Walter Diemer brought his invention to the Fleer Company and was named and marketed as "Dubble Bubble" gum. To help sell the gum and help people understand, Diemer taught the salesmen how to blow bubbles using the gum. The salesmen in turn taught the people who bought the gum. It was a huge success and for many years the Dubble Bubble gum was the only bubble gum on the market.

The Topps Candy Company started manufacturing bubble gum at the end of World War II. The company introduced the famous Bazooka Bubble Gum. This was named after the musical instrument that was created in the 1930s by Bob Burns. As an added gimmick, the gum had "Bazooka Joe" comic strips on the gum wrapper which contributed to its popularity. Also as incentives for children, the Topps Company included gum to the Bazooka Joe baseball cards in 1953.

Each type and brand of bubble gum, may it be bubble or chewing gum, has its own unique formula. But generally, these steps are followed in making gum. The ingredients are placed in large steam-jacketed kettles where they are cooked at high temperatures until melted and become as thick as maple syrup. While maintaining the high temperature, the syrup is passed through mesh screen filters. They are then moved into vacuum strainers. After this, the hot liquid mix is poured into a machine that has slow revolving blades. It is here that sugar, flavoring and corn syrup are added into the mix. In making sugarless gum, sweeteners like sorbitol, xylitol, or mannitol substitute the sugar.

After this step, the sweetened liquid moves to a cooler where the temperature is dropped to slightly solidify the gum and is prepared for the extruder machine. The extruder machine will maneuver the gum to achieve a certain texture. When set, the mix is passed through a roller where the gum is flattened. The thinnest sheets are made into stick gum while the thicker sheets are made into candy-coated gum. The stick gum then goes through high powered machines where it is wrapped, packaged and shipped to different candy stores around the world.

The candy-coated gum though needs to go through more work. The thick sheets are cut into pellets and then sprinkled with powdered sugar. The sprinkled pellets are then set aside and allowed to set for 48 hours. When set, these pellets move into large revolving machines that coat them with candy until they reach the desired coat thickness. They then go through high powered machines where they are wrapped, packaged and shipped to the different candy shops.

At the present day, blowing bubbles has become a tradition that friends and families have where they pass on the joy of blowing bubbles with bubble gum.

Coffee Dangers and Preventative Measures - Teeth-Whitening and Breath Control

Coffee is the most widely abused addictive substance in the world. After only a few weeks of drinking it, the human brain forms an addiction to the caffeine that it contains, and sooner than you would like to admit, you find yourself unable to go a day without it. Besides being addictive, there is nothing physically wrong with coffee, in fact new studies indicate that consuming upwards of six cups (that's right, six cups) each day may actually add years to your life. However, there are a few social issues to worry about when indulging in this beverage, not the least of which is the damage that it does to your breath and the whiteness of your teeth.

After a single cup of coffee, you will find that your breath smells considerably worse than it had just a few minutes prior. This is because this hot beverage is extremely potent. Business meetings, dates, outings with friends, can be ruined by the terrible breath that this substance creates. Additionally, it stains the teeth an unattractive shade of brown. You may be addicted to caffeine, but you need to be conscious of what coffee can do to your appearance and to your breath. There are two ways of reacting to these problems.

First, we address bad-breath. The best advice is to avoid drinking coffee if you are going to be in close proximity to someone right after you have finished your cup. No matter how well you cover up the smell, someone sitting right next to you, or worse, someone you are kissing, will notice the unmistakable smell. Your best bet is to allow for at least 15 minutes of time before you go into a social event where you might be self-conscious of the smell of your breath. The second aspect you should consider is breath control. Try bringing along mouthwash or gum to social events where you know that you will need to be drinking coffee but will not have the luxury of a buffer period.

Secondly, we tackle stained teeth. Brushing alone often cannot repair the damage done by massive amounts of coffee drinking. There are several products on the market that claim to speed up the whitening process and they should all be considered for their strengths and weaknesses. For example, teeth-whitening gum products and mouthwashes are inexpensive and low maintenance, but are not efficient or guaranteed to produce the results you want. If you have your mind set on correcting your stained teeth, invest in a teeth-whitening procedure. Teeth-whitening has become a socially acceptable alternative to months of brushing and anxiety, your real decision should be whether or not you feel it is cost effective. Often, if you are in need of a quick, permanent fix, the teeth-whitening procedure can aid in correcting the unsightly appearance that is affecting your teeth.

Coffee is an excellent stimulant and is superb for focusing and directing the mind. If you are an avid drinker of this beverage, you need to be aware of the social dangers posed by your habit. Keep your breath and your teeth in check by choosing defense tactics that fit your lifestyle.

There are many people who suffer the effects of acid reflux disease, a disorder in which the contents of the stomach including gastric acids are regurgitated back up into the esophagus and throat. Those who suffer from its effects know the symptoms well; heartburn, pain or burning in the throat, bitter taste at the back of the throat, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, and hoarseness caused by damage to the larynx. Many people mistakenly think that acid reflux, or GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease), is caused by the production of to much stomach acid. While stomach acid is the main cause of the symptoms experienced the reason it gets back into the esophagus is the failure of 3 specific points in the esophagus; the anti-reflux barrier, the lower esophageal sphincter, and the gastroesophageal valve. If any one of these three barriers is weakened or fails acid has the opportunity to move back up the esophagus.

Probably the best home remedy to keep acid reflux at bay is eating a healthy diet that minimizes the production of stomach acid. One way to find out which foods make the symptoms worse is to keep a food log for a few weeks. Keep track of which foods set off the acid reflux and then it becomes easier to avoid them, or at least eat them in moderation. This list can vary from person to person but there are some foods that are known to cause acid reflux symptoms in the majority of its sufferers. These include fatty foods, spicy foods, certain spices, some citrus fruits, and caffeine.

One of the more unknown remedies for acid reflux is apple cider vinegar. In addition to treating GERD apple cider vinegar is also rumored to help with weight loss, acne, cholesterol, constipation, and heartburn. It is believed that the acidity of the vinegar mimics the acid in your stomach helping to more easily digest the food that has been eaten. The best way to take apple cider vinegar is just before or with your meal. One tablespoon mixed with water works best but make sure to use the organic variety, which still has the enzymes in it.

There are also certain fruits and vegetables that have a calming effect on the stomach can help control the symptoms of acid reflux. These include bananas, apples, figs, pineapple and papaya along with carrots and cabbage. Cinnamon, cardamom, mace, nutmeg, and slippery elm are a few herbs and spices that also help reduce the effects of GERD.

Chewing gum is another quick remedy for acid reflux. It works by increasing saliva output and saliva is the body's natural ant-acid. As you swallow the excess saliva produced by chewing gum it settles the stomach and reduces the amount of acid being produced.

It is important to talk to your doctor about your GERD and get a thorough check up because if not properly treated it can damage the esophagus and can eventually cause a form of throat cancer.

Caffeine Mints, Gum and What-Have-You

It used to be that if you wanted a caffeine rush, you had to either brew up a pot of coffee or buy a six pack of soft drinks. Times change. Now if you want caffeine and the energy rush associated with it, you can eat or chew your way there.

Do you prefer mints? Gum? Chocolate candy? Doesn't matter, really; caffeine can be brought to your bloodstream courtesy of any of the above. One may be tempted to ask the obvious. Why? Why are companies putting out caffeinated candies and candy-type products when caffeine is so readily available at your local convenience store courtesy of the Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottling companies?
